Last weekend was the Evolve Big Alpha and of course we could not wait to jump in and experience the 4vs1 gameplay action.

Even though the wait times were excruciating, I managed to play a dozen or so hunter and monster missions. Being an alpha, I expected a very limited gameplay experience, so having only one map didn’t really bug me since it took a few rounds to figure out exactly what I was supposed to do, the HUD and the controls. They drop you into the mission with a short video explanation about your character’s role on the team, or your objectives as the monster. What I didn’t expect was to enjoy playing as the monster much more than being on a team with 3 others. I started to feel a little bad for the monster: all he wants to do is eat and grow big and strong!

The alpha ended up leaving me intrigued to play more as long as the game evolves (ha! punny!) into more than the cat and mouse chase that was the alpha.

Below are highlights from gameplay as both a hunter and the monster.

Evolve hits physical and digital store shelves on Feb. 10, 2015 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. See the game’s website for more information.
