There’s this trend right now in the gaming industry to try and “esportify” everything: make any game that has the slightest competitive aspect into a full blown competition with huge prize pools and production value. Take the ESL Player Unknown Battleground tournament last weekend for example. A 350k tournament for an unreleased game, with little to no observing tool and no clear tournament rules. This led to a less than stellar event that still managed to pull in huge viewing numbers, despite ghosting, bugs, delays and just being an overall mess. The team discusses this and more, in OBAN’s second episode!
